(from the chapter) Notes that adult mental health has its origins and determinants in childhood. By taking this life-span viewpoint, child mental health can be seen as a discipline that has implications for the prevention of adult mental helath problems, and creates possibilities for early intervention. This chapter describes the Sangath Center for Child Development and Family Guidance, a community-based organization in Goa that is devoted to the assessment and therapy of childhood developmental and behavioral problems using a multidisciplinary approach. The word 'Sangath' is a Konkani word meaning support or partnership, and this is what forms the basis of the organization's activities. Their goal is to meet the mental health needs of children and their families. Some main topics discussed in the chapter include the following: (1) Child mental health care in India--an overview, (2) The origins of Sangath, (3) growth of the organization, (4) What does Sangath do? and (5) Future plans.
