Recent advances in the treatment of HIV infection have led to prolonged survival and an emphasis on the long-term clinical management of HIV disease. In this article, the authors discuss the assessment of a patient who is newly diagnosed with HIV infection. The initial assessment provides the opportunity to begin a partnership between the doctor and the patient that may continue for many years.
