PHILADELPHIA -- Rapid diagnostic tests for malaria are saving lives -- and not just among patients with malaria. In research for the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, scientists in Tanzania have found that tests made on patients with fever often show that the infection is not malaria and needs urgently to be treated with an appropriate medicine -- not anti-malarial drugs. Dr Florida Muro from the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi, Tanzania, gave Peter Goodwin the details of her research on this after delivering her findings to the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
